The Right Reverend Michael Lewis, 54, began his ministry as bishop of the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf in 2007.
For eight years prior to that he was Bishop of Middleton, where he had day-to-day oversight for parishes and people in Central, South and East Manchester as well as Lancashire towns like Rochdale, Oldham, and Ashton-under-Lyne. He also had school, college and university responsibilities on behalf of the Church both locally and nationally.
A native of Hampshire, he read oriental studies (Hebrew, Aramaic and Syriac) as second degree Theology at Merton College, Oxford and Cuddesdon Theological College.
He was ordained in 1978 and before Manchester, served in parish and higher education posts in the Dioceses of Southwark (South London) and Worcester.
He and Julia have three children, Paul, Eleanor and George and a grandson Jacob.
